This is UK firm inks refinery deal

HA NOI — UK-based Foster Wheeler Energy Limited has signed a contract to design Nghi Son refinery and petrochemical (RP) project for the Nghi Son RP Company, according to deputy director of the company Cao Hoai Duong.

Under the contract, the UK partner will finish the design within 16 months of July 18, the day the contract was signed.

Foster Wheeler Energy Limited was also one of the designers for Dung Quat, the country’s first oil refinery.

The first stage of the Nghi Son Refinery&Petrochemical Complex project will cost around US$6 billion. It will be built in the Nghi Son Economic Zone, around 200km south of Ha Noi.

Once operational in 2013, the plant will be able to produce 10 million tonnes of crude oil per year or 200,000 barrels per day. This is 1.5 time the capacity of Dung Quat refinery. It will then be doubled in the second stage of the project.

Nghi Son project will import crude oil from Kuwait to produce petroleum like A92, A95, A98 and even fuel for jet planes. It is expected to meet 60 per cent of the national demand for oil and gas.

It is one of the country’s key projects aimed at satisfying the estimated domestic market demand for oil and petroleum – about 18 million tonnes in 2010, 25 million tonnes in 2015, 37 million tonnes in 2020 and 48 million tonnes in 2025.

In addition to the refinery, the Nghi Son Economic Zone has also licensed 16 other projects. Another 13 projects are awaiting investment licences from provincial authorities.

Total investment capital for the projects is nearly $10.3 billion.
